Purnedu Kant – A Negative Blood Donor
.
I am A Negative blood type and used to donate my blood in blood donation camps. Later on I came to know that as this is a rare group, the requirement of this group is very seldom, and so there is high probability of the donated blood going waste, as it can not be kept beyond the normal shelf life.
Then I came to know about 'Safe Blood Organisation' founded by the famous heart surgeon Dr. Trehan. This maintains a data bank of potential blood donors and pass on the message for blood requirement when the need arises. I immediately registered myself in it. Once I received a call from Apollo Hospital, New Delhi that an accident victim needs A Negative blood urgently for saving his life. The attendant of the patient contacted me after my willingness was passed on to him. He informed that the patient, while driving his own new small bus as a trial run, had met with a head on collision with a truck and one of his leg was amputed to save his life. Post amputation, he needed blood, which was exhausted in the Blood Banks. He offered to take me up from my office in Nirman Bhavan New Delhi. Since he was an outsider in Delhi (from Indore), I promised to reach the hospital at my own. I went there and donated my blood. Later on I came to know from the attendant that the life of the patient, who was his brother, was saved. He had to spend a week or so in the hospital after which he was released.
Knowing this, I realised for the first time in my life that life is so precious and it can be saved by timely help in form of donating the blood needed. I, being of a rare blood group, vowed to register myself in all such data banks to become a 'moving' and 'available in need' blood donor rather donating in normal blood donation camps, which creates a restriction in donating blood within a span of 3 months from such donation. I have got registered on this site also on the very first day I visited it.
